When a death occurs

When a Death Occurs

If the death occurs in the home, you should first contact the GP of the deceased. They will arrive shortly to confirm the death and to provide you with a medical certificate. At this point, we can arrange the transportation of the deceased to our Chapel of rest.

If the death occurs in a residential / nursing home, the staff will contact the chosen Funeral Director on your behalf, instructing them to collect the deceased and transport them to the Chapel of rest. With this in mind, it is important to provide the contact details of your nominated Funeral Director to the home upon the admittance of your family member.

If the death occurs in the hospital, the Doctors will inform you of the death and complete the necessary paperwork before registering the death, prior to us transporting the deceased to our chapel of rest.

Registering a Death

WHAT TO DO FOLLOWING A DEATH

If a death has occurred at home, please call us once the doctor or medical professional has attended to verify the death.
If a death has occurred in the hospital, contact us during waking hours at your earliest convenience. We will guide you through what needs to happen next to reflect your circumstances. We will then arrange for the deceased to be brought into our care. Our telephone number is 01530 814 999 (24 hours).

REGISTRATION OF DEATH

Deaths are registered in person by appointment at the Registrar’s office in the district where the death occurred.

The doctor’s surgery or hospital will advise you when the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) has been sent electronically to the relevant Registration Service. If the death occurred in Leicestershire or Rutland, the Registration Service will contact you to make an appointment for you to register the death. If the death occurred in Northamptonshire, please ring the Registrar or go online to book an appointment.

Certificates

The Registrar will issue a ‘Green Form’ (Form 9) for burial or cremation, which we will require to allow the funeral to occur. The registrar will ask you how many Death Certificates you require at £11.00 each.* *These are required for administrating an estate. The amount needed will depend on the complexity of the estate, but an average would be 3-6 copies. These certificates will be given to you at your registration appointment.

Tell Us Once Service

This is an optional but beneficial service. The Registrar will take information from you to allow you to access the service, which notifies all relevant central and local government departments about the person who has died. One simple phone call or giving information online will avoid the need to contact many individual government and council departments. It deals with matters including State Pension, Benefits, Council Tax, HM Revenue, Passports, Driving Licence, Blue Badge, Bus Passes, Library Cards, Electoral Service etc. The Registrar will give you a unique reference number to do this online at www.gov.uk/tell-us-once (you have 28 days to log on to the website), or they will provide you with a phone number to call if you prefer.

Deaths Referred to the Coroner

Suppose the death occurred in Leicestershire or Rutland and has been referred to the Coroner. In that case, the Registrar will contact you when the necessary paperwork has been received from the Coroner and arrange an appointment for you to register the death.

In Northamptonshire, the Coroner will contact you to confirm that they have completed the paperwork. You can then ring the registrar or go online (see contact details below) to book an appointment.
